Statehood - An Issue in the 2010 Campaign E-mail

D.C. Statehood has become a major issue in the 2010 campaign as District candidates speak out on the need for full self-government for the 600,000 residents of our national capital. Council Chairman Vincent Gray addresses the need for civil disobedience for statehood. Shadow Representative candidate Nate Bennett-Fleming focuses his campaign on the issue of statehood. Post columnish robert McCartney writes that solid, dramatic action is needed to achieve statehood. Current D.C. Shadow Representative Mike Panetta proposes that D.C. issue a statehood license plate.

Council includes statehood funds in 2011 budget E-mail
When the D.C. Council passed the District of Columbia's 2011 budget on May 26, 2010, they included $250,000 for statehood and voting rights activities, an increase from the $100,000 allotted in 2010 which went to the Council's Special Committee on Statehood and Self-Determination.  Mayor Adrian Fenty's proposed 2011 budget had not included any funding for statehood activities despite the Council's creation this year of the 51st State Commission which is in the process of being organized. Statehood activists from the around the District thank the Council for putting statehood back on the District Government's agenda!
 
51st State Commission Establishment Act of 2010 Approved E-mail

On January 5, 2010, the D.C. Council approved Bill 18-0177, the 51st State Commission Establishment Act of 2010. The Mayor signed the bill, which became D.C. Act 18-0289, on January 25, 2010. The Act was transmitted to Congress for its required layover and review. The Act is projected to become law on March 22, 2010, at the end of the the Congressional layover period.

Statehood, yes. Voting rights, nah. That's the sentiment of D.C. voters who have been trying to gin up support for statehood. These supporters don't oppose the push for congressional voting rights. However, they say statehood is what residents of the nation's capital want and what they are due.
